Winkleigh, Devon Located in England, U.K.
Authored by Pickatrail.co.uk Winkleigh is a small village in Devon, between Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks. It is believed to have been settled during prehistoric times, as the records indicate Bronze Age finds in the area. The medieval parish Church of All Saints has undergone several restorations, with indications that the original structure is 12th century, with 14th and 15th century features remaining today. Despite the diminutive size of the village, there were two castles in Winkleigh during the 12th century. Two large mounds are in the village, each the remains of their historic castles. During the 13th century the village prospered from sheep and wool products; however Winkleigh is best known for a much later product, Inch's Cider. Winkleigh is also known for its World War II RAF Airfield and for the training Centre which was used for simulating the Normandy Invasion.
