Sandwich, Kent Located in England, U.K.
Authored by Pickatrail.co.uk Sandwich is a historic town on the River Stour in Kent, one of the Cinque (five) Ports, along the English Channel where the crossing to the continent is narrowest. Many medieval structures remain including the White Mill built in the 18th century which now houses the Heritage Centre where Victorian life, Farming & Craft displays are offered. Sandwich Bay boasts two world-class golf courses and nature reserves. This delightful town has four medieval churches and The Guildhall houses an ancient courtroom and a museum of ancient and medieval times. The medieval Fisher Gate on the quay is scheduled as an Ancient Monument, while the port was where the first captive elephant landed in 1255, as a gift for Henry III. The Dutch influence is evident in the architectural style that the Huguenots brought with them. A number of famous residents lived here, however the Lord of Sandwich left his identity for time immemorial when he requested a piece of meat on two pieces of bread.
