 Authored by Pickatrail.co.uk Ramsgate is a large seaside town on the Isle of Thanet in Kent. Originally a fishing hamlet, the town grew as the harbour became more important. King George IV favoured Ramsgate's port, declaring it a Royal Harbour; the only such harbour in the country. Ramsgate provides channel ferries to the continent; and has a large flourishing marina. The town is primarily known for its magnificent coastline with superb beaches which have won Blue Flag awards, attracting numerous visitors. The harbour area is the hub of Ramsgate where there is much to do and see. On the clifftop at Pegwell Bay there is a replica Viking Ship on display. The town also has many outstanding buildings and churches with St. Laurence Church being the oldest, dating back to the 11th century. There is a maritime museum, an RAF museum at the airport relating the history of Ramsgate's significant involvement in World War II; a National Nature Reserve, beautiful parks and many historic buildings.
