Modbury, Devon Located in England, U.K.
Authored by Pickatrail.co.uk Modbury is a town in Devon in the South Hams, close to Dartmoor National Park. The town is picturesquely surrounded by rolling hills where some of the streets climb the side of a slope creating wonderful vistas of the rural landscape. Dating back to Saxon times, the town was once a port and a trading centre. Some historical structures remain with the Church of St. George having an early medieval origin; originally called St. Mary's, until reconstruction circa 1300 when it was renamed. The Exeter Inn is an interesting 14th century building that has a stream running underneath it; and was a meeting place for the Royalists during the 17th century. The streets were once cobbled and many houses were built on pillars. Modbury also served as a billeting area during the Napoleonic Wars. The remains of The Barracks can still be viewed, with the Barracks wall and two guardhouses that have survived the passage of time.
