Lymington is a town on the bank of the Lymington River near the New Forest in Hampshire. Lymington has been a port town for many centuries and today serves as a center for marinas, sailing and yachting despite the strong river currents. The well preserved Iron Age Buckland Rings situated close to Lymington is a 'multivallate' Hillfort, indicating multiple banks and ditches dating back to about the 4th century B.C. There is little evidence of Dark Age habitation until the arrival of the Germanic Jutes during the 6th century who founded limentun, with the Domesday Book of 1086 recording an Anglo-Saxon settlement name Lentune. Today Lymington is a tourist mecca due its close proximity to the New Forest. Lymington also touts its smuggling history and promotes the theory that there are tunnels under the old inns on High Street leading to the town quay. The town centre exudes an ambience of charm with cobbled streets, and many Victorian and Georgian structures. The Parish Church of St Thomas was built in the mid 1200s at the top of High Street and notably, "Abide with me" was written by Henry Lyte a former church curate. At the bottom of High Street a cobblestone road takes you to Old Town Quay which is still used for commercial fishing. Lymington has gained a reputation as being one of the best coastal towns, as a result of its outstanding and magnificent landscape. Walking the Solent Way footpath from Lymington to Hurst Castle takes one through Keyhaven Nature Reserve, a beautiful coastal walk in a Site of Special Scientific Interest that supports rare plants and wildlife. For a break from the sublime beauty, beaches, water sports, cycling, golfing and riding visit the St Barbe Museum and (Art) Gallery for an exploration of the history of Lymington and the New Forest with hands-on displays; and the era of salt-making, the development of the market town and port, boat builders and of course, a view of the smuggling activity along the coast.
