Chudleigh, Devon Located in England, U.K.
Authored by Pickatrail.co.uk Chudleigh is a small town in Devon near the River Teign and close to Dartmoor National Park. An Iron Age Hill Fort, Castle Dyke is evidence of prehistoric activity; and at Chudleigh Rocks, a Site of Special Scientific Interest just outside of town there is evidence of Stone Age Man. Chudleigh developed during Saxon times and the Church of St Martin and St Mary dating from the 13th century is most probably on the site of an earlier place of worship. The Bishop built a large rural palace at that time, remnants of which can still be seen. The Great Fire of 1807 destroyed most of the town; however it was rebuilt within two years. Chudleigh has retained an earlier charm with narrow lanes and footpaths and lovely cottages. In close proximity to town you will find Ugbrooke House, magnificent Canonteign Falls with the highest waterfall in England and Becky Falls home to endangered flora and fauna.
