Christchurch, Dorset Located in England, U.K.
Authored by Pickatrail.co.uk Christchurch is a town in Dorset situated at the juncture of the rivers Avon and Stour; adjacent to Bournemouth and close to the New Forest; this ancient area has been welcoming people over the millennia to its beautiful shores. The town's harbour and beaches with its nature reserves has made the town a popular tourist destination. During the 18th and 19th centuries one of the main industries in Christchurch was smuggling, which employed numerous townspeople, many accumulated great wealth. The "romance" of the smuggling industry has added spice to a rich history that includes two castles, one destroyed by Cromwell's army in 1652, while the other still stands on the cliffs at Highcliffe. The beautiful Priory Church with its legend of the Miraculous Beam adds another dimension to the enchantment of the town.
