Authored by Pickatrail.co.uk Canterbury is a city in Kent that has a long and ancient history from prehistoric times from invasion by the Romans who claimed the area from a Celtic tribe, to the murder of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury; to the devastation of the Black Plague, religious and political uprisings to its modern emergence as one of the most visited cities in England. Since the medieval Canterbury Tales were written by Geoffrey Chaucer, pilgrimages to Canterbury Cathedral have steadily risen to the present one million tourists each year. However, there are other tourist meccas in the city such as Canterbury Castle, the Roman Museum, Christopher Marlowe's birthplace, the 13th century walls, the Roman city wall rebuilt in the 14th century, ruins of St Augustine's Abbey, a Norman castle and The King's School, one of the oldest schools in England.
