Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset Located in England, U.K.
Authored by Pickatrail.co.uk Burnham-on-Sea is a town in Somerset on the River Parrett. This was no more than a sand flat until the late 18th century, when it became popular as a seaside resort. Historically a flood plain, the Romans built sea defences, however drainage problems were vulnerable to flooding leaving the area sparsely populated. Reclamation of land was assisted by a concrete seawall built in 1911; a curved concrete wall was finished in 1988. Prior to the lighthouse, the medieval St. Andrew's Church placed a light on its tower during the 18th century to guide the ships. Protection of shipping prompted a series of lighthouses being built, with the present High Lighthouse and the Lighthouse on legs at the beach replacing the earlier models. Today Burnham is a busy resort with large beach areas and amenities such as the lovely Apex Leisure & Wildlife Park situated near the beaches. Fishing, horseback riding, cycling, donkey rides and walking are some of the activities that you can find at Burnham-On-Sea.
